A workshop and unveiling with Johanne Rahaman
Trinidad-born and Miami-based documentary photographer Johanne Rahaman has been examining urban and rural spaces in Black communities throughout the state since 2014 for her project BlackFlorida. Believing in the beauty of the everyday experience, Johanne takes the time to show the folks she works with how to capture and preserve their rich family history. She explains, “It’s 90% conversation and 10% photography. All you need is a smartphone to take a good picture.”
About the Event
For the first artwork reveal of the New Year, Johanne will lead Commissioner members through a photography workshop at the lush Center for Subtropical Affairs. Exploring place, technique and how to shift your gaze from voyeur to collaborator, together we will memorialize the community that we’re building right here and now. Better than writing a message in a bottle to throw at sea, our photographs and commissioned works will one day serve as a timestamp of the people, the natural environment and the story of a creative and invested community.
The photography workshop will be followed by tropical drinks and food.
> Bring your fully charged smartphone
> Wear comfortable outdoor shoes
> Expect to take pictures and be photographed
