About Patty Suau (2003 YoungArts Winner in Visual Arts)
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Cuban-American artist Patty Suau attended New World School of the Arts and Maryland Institute College of Art. Suau graduated from Florida International University (FIU) where she received her BA in International Relations, specializing in Economics. Drawings form the core of her work. A series of miniature erotic drawings, they are no larger than three inches in height or width, and are presented in over-sized frames. The large-scale frame and big blank mat causes the viewer to discover a moment of intimacy in the vast negative space. Seduced by the tight rendering and detail of the drawings the viewers must get so close to the pieces that the negative space of the over-sized frame engulfs the peripheral view, turning the viewer into a voyeur.
This exhibition is part of a residency—through a partnership between YoungArts and Bay Parc Apartments—that provides YoungArts alumni with the space and resources they need to create site-specific installations at Parc Space, a 500-square-foot installation-based gallery. Accompanied by activations and art talks, the project connects artists to local audiences and fosters art as an integral part of living in Miami.
