In 1924, Georgia O’Keeffe began painting magnified close-ups of flowers that invite the viewer into the image. Enlarging petals to the point of abstraction, O’Keeffe asks us to use our imaginations and attribute our own meanings to the lines, shapes, and forms depicted on canvas.  With spring in full bloom, there’s no better time to revisit these floral works, and the paintings of fellow modernist innovators at The Norton Museum of Art’s latest exhibitions, At the Dawn of a New Age: Early Twentieth-Century American Modernism and From Man Ray to O'Keeffe. In a guided tour, learn about the many artists who rejected realism in favor of art with emotional experience and harmonious design.

Afterward, we’ll have lunch at the museum and drive to Armory Art Center—a nearby 1939 art deco-inspired gem. Dedicated to the creation and appreciation of art, Armory Art Center is putting its mission into action with a creative drawing workshop just for Commissioner. John Lark is the Artist-in-Residence teaching our session, and we’ve invited a figure model to help us illustrate the relationship between the human and natural form.

Then, enjoy a rare opportunity to visit the private collection of Beth Rudin DeWoody at The Bunker Artspace. In a 2017 article for The New York Times, writer Bob Morris describes her commitment to emerging artists:

“Years ago, when Ms. DeWoody, who resides between New York, Los Angeles and West Palm Beach, visited the small Harlem studio of Kehinde Wiley, he was struggling. The $5,000 she spent on one of his portraits, he later told her, was more important than bigger sums that followed because it helped him survive. Now he is an art world superstar and has been selected to paint the official portrait of former President Barack Obama for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.”

If there’s a lesson here, it’s to encourage artists you believe in early in their careers. Honing your palette often entails research, process, and exposure. On this field trip, we dive into all three.

To support all the organizations and creative workers powering our West Palm Beach excursion, the cost is $185 without transport or $250 round trip transport. Lunch is included and spots are limited.
