Juana Valdes's Reveal on the River

Water as collective memory is a reccurring theme in Juana Valdes’s personal journey and in her artistic practice. The limited edition pieces that she created for Commissioner members are made of ceramic casts of plastic SEI water bottles—a brand that’s been awarded for their innovative design—embedded in natural stone. Titled Thirst, this work juxtaposes the thirst for freedom, which drove many immigrants across dangerous waters to Miami, with the U.S.’s thirst for profits that has created high-priced luxury brands of bottled water. Her piece forces the question: What are we doing to safeguard our waters in South Florida?

Very thankful for the students at University of Miami and Dr. Justin Stoler, Associate Professor with the Geography department, for their invaluable support with this project. And so much gratitude to Bakehouse Art Complex for providing temporary space; Amy Rosenberg at The Underline; Paperwater and vocalist Dyna Edyne; and spirits sponsors Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Volley Tequila.
