Hô` Lô, a performance and offering by Vũ
For us it’s the radical imagination.
We’re so very thankful to Khánh Nguyên Hoàng Vũ (goes by Vũ, they/them), our third commissioned artist of Season Four. On April 30, they offered a meditative performance; created 40 one-of-a-kind hand-thrown ceramic gourds for each of our Collector members; and seeded an ethos of vulnerability and experimentation that has inspired our programming for next season.
A graduate of New World School of the Arts, Vũ’s foundational studies mostly focused on painting. Expanding their practice to ceramics has allowed them to work in more collaborative spaces, and has offered new pathways to other disciplines including performance.
Vũ draws influences from minds such as Thich Nhat Hanh and his teachings on mindfulness and Trinh T. Minh-ha and her studies on postcolonial feminism. With an oeuvre that spans from painting to installation, their work opens a unique poetic vein that reflects upon the intensity and constant shifts in contemporary existence. They develop forms that do not follow binary systems. Rather, their works serve as a safe space for some soft, deep-seated and honest self reflection.
