"I Want Us to Feel Seen, I Want Us to Feel Heard"
Filmed by Juan Luis Matos and edited by Monica Sorelle, produced by Preguntas Studio
Meet Darryl DeAngelo Terrell, inaugural artist commissioned to kick off Commissioner Detroit.
Darryl works primarily within lens-based media to explore the displacement of Black and Brown people, femme identity and strength, the Black family structure, sexuality, gender, and safe spaces. Pulling from influences they observed growing up on the East Side of Detroit, their work is also a reflection of popular culture traversed through media such as music, movies, and other similarly related sources. Through photography, video, and performance art, Darryl is advancing larger conversations about Blackness and intersectionality.
With a Bachelor of Fine Art from Wayne State University in 2015 and a Master of Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017, Darryl is a Black Rock Senegal Resident (2021); Redbull House of Art Resident, (2019—2020); and Kresge Arts In Detroit Fellow of Visual Arts (2019). They are a Lighthouse artist in residence, and exhibit at Louis Buhl & Co. in Salon Highlight: Darryl DeAngelo Terrell through June 22, 2022.
In a unique offering for Commissioner, Darryl has created a limited edition print available individually, or alongside commissioned works by Amna Asghar and Judy Bowman. Twenty percent of proceeds of sale benefit We The People of Detroit, an organization that educates and empowers Detroit residents on issues related to civil rights, land, water, education and democracy.
