Community Portraits by Nicole Combeau

Inspired by early self-portraits by artist A.G., where he places a spotlight directly on himself, and the general theme of his essay on "How To Be Great" —performance, embracing being seen, and a subtle slowness in that experience—we created a simple but effective set to make portraits with the participants from the night.

On June 8 at The Wolfsonian—FIU, sitters were invited to embrace the spotlight, to be present with themselves, and to play with the light, shadow, and camera. This initiative is part of a larger project by photographer Nicole Combeau titled the Community Portrait Series, which provides free, intentional, and affirming portraits to members of the Miami community.

Nicole Combeau is a multi-disciplinary artist, educator, and photographer based in Miami, Florida. We’re thankful for the overwhelming support from our member community over the years. Big love to Nicole’s frequent collaborator Trevor Owens, and to Oscar Rieveling, Mitchell Wolfson Sr Foundation, New World School of the Arts, and the entire Wolfsonian–FIU team—many of whom are pictured here.
