Virtual Artmaking with PAMM Free Second Saturdays
On Saturday, July 11 from 10 AM-noon, join Commissioner and PAMM Free Second Saturdays for “Get Your Art On”, virtual artmaking with artists Jahaira Ríos Campos y Gálvez and Kira Tippenhauer. Open to all, we’re celebrating Commissioner’s season finale and are together reimagining ways to bring people together, creatively and in community.
First: Register on Zoom at bit.ly/seasontwofinale. Can’t decide which workshop to participate in? Join both!
10-11 AM | In a photo transfer workshop led by Jahaira Ríos Campos y Gálvez, experiment with image transfers by using photographs found at home and transferring them to interesting new surfaces. Create unique collages or use this technique to transform your images into watercolor paintings.
11 AM-noon | In a clay-inspired workshop with Kira Tippenhauer, behold The Venus of Willendhorf—one of the world’s oldest works of art. Due to The Venus’s small size it has been suggested that she is a good luck and a mother goddess symbol.
Then: Prep your materials
For your session with Jahaira, print out images you like to create your composite using a few items from home. For the clay-inspired workshop with Kira, make your own clay using household items and kitchen ingredients or buy some at your local art supplies store. Here’s the full list of materials that you’ll need:
For the Photo Transfer Aesthetic workshop, bring:
Inkjet printer and paper
Inkjet printed images
Watercolor paper (cold press)
Acetone
Cotton balls
Spoon Scissors (optional)
Additional art materials of choice
For the Sculpt a Good Luck Charm workshop, make your own clay:
Oatmeal clay is very textured and dries very hard.
What you need: 1 part flour, 2 parts oatmeal, 1 part water paint (optional)
What you do: Making oatmeal clay is incredibly simple. All you need to do is combine 1 part flour with 2 parts oatmeal and 1 part water. Use more or less water to achieve the desired texture. Once mixed, use the clay to create art. When dry, sculptures can be painted.

About Jahaira Ríos Campos y Gálvez (@jahairariosgalvez)
Born in the village of Rancheria in Chinandega, Nicaragua, Jahaira Ríos Campos y Gálvez immigrated to the U.S. in 1979 with her parents, fleeing effects of civil war. Her practice is currently focused on photography, fiber arts, and performance; creating work that often intertwines the three. She is a past ProjectArt resident, has led photography workshops at the Biscayne Nature Center, and is a recent contributor to online publication UNAFRAID run by local artist Belaxis Buil. She is part of the duo that makes up the Cuentos Retablado project along with Carolina Cueva. Jahaira currently teaches Photography at Florida International University, and creates works from a love of investigation, experimentation and self-reflection. She looks to inspire a sense of inquiry in others. Through her artwork she delves into themes pulled from childhood experiences, motherhood, and reflections on her mixed indigenous heritage. Her work stems from her desire to touch on delicate subjects in a way that provokes conversations and reflection. She believes art is medicine.
Jahaira received her B.F.A. from New World School of the Arts/University of Florida and her M.F.A. in Creative Photography from Barry University. She currently lives in Miami, Florida with her husband, four children and retired greyhounds Mr. Darcy and Winston.
About Kira Tippenhauer (@kira.made)
Kira Tippenhauer is a ceramic and fiber artist born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She immigrated to the U.S. from Haiti in 2004, and now lives and works in Miami, Florida. Beyond initial appearances, the layers of her family’s past and present histories are profoundly overwhelming and complicated—a cultural history of conflicting identities she has inherited and a perpetual source for her work. Trained in visual arts, Kira works with stoneware and other materials often associated with traditional women’s work, such as textiles, weaving, and braiding, to discuss beauty, fragility, femininity, resilience, intersectionality, identity and personal history.
She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Miami International University of Art & Design, and has been the recipient of the Wavemaker Grant for Cannonball’s Open Source Art, Pottery Workshop supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and John S. & James L. Knight Foundation. This grant later inspired Kira to launch her project “Lakay Pottery Collective,” which is a shared creative space in Little Haiti, where local potters and ceramic artists are offered hands-on workshops and open dialogue on the creative journey.
Kira has also been a teaching artist for many years. She has contributed to many outreach programs with local institutions and organizations, such as Arts-for-Learning, PAMM, Fairchild Gardens, the Haitian Heritage Museum and the Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance. Her work has recently been exhibited at the Bakehouse Art Complex and is currently on view at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex.
