Virtual | In Conversation with Philip Smith

In a conversation with Chana Budgazad Sheldon, executive director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, meet the incomparable Philip Smith, our very first commissioned artist of Season Four.

As a young artist, Philip moved from his home in Miami to New York, working as a writer for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, before going on to become managing editor of GQ. He is famously known for establishing The Pictures Generation movement with the seminal exhibition PICTURES in 1977, along with other emerging artists of the time—Troy Brauntuch, Jack Goldstein, Sherrie Levine, and yes, Robert Longo.

Philip’s unusual trajectory as both a storyteller and visual artist has been captured in his memoir, Walking Through Walls, published by Simon and Schuster—the true story of growing up with a father who discovers that he has supernatural powers.
